At Roberts Communities we want strive to make sure all of our residents are safe, whether they are or aren’t at home. Summer is a popular time for family vacations, but before you leave, it is important to practice property safety and protective measures so your home is just as you left it.
Before you go, let the main office of your community know as well as a trusted neighbor, so they can watch your property for suspicious activity. Communicate with your children to not let just anyone know that you are leaving town. You should have a person you trust, whether it be a neighbor or family member, stop by the home on occasion to check up on things, pick up the mail or take out the trash cans. If you don’t have someone that you trust enough to do these things for you, suspend your mail and newspaper service while you are away, so they don’t pile up in the driveway, making it evident that no one has been home for a bit.
Of course, make sure all your windows and doors are locked and your alarm system is on. Consider investing in a good security system with surveillance cameras. Many systems allow you to see what is going on in and out of your home right from your mobile device, and you can control the security system no matter where you are. A good one will also come with times or motion sensors with bright exterior motion lights, which will scare any intruder away. Also remove any spare keys you may have around the home and bring it with you.
Create the illusion that someone is home by doing some yard work before you leave so it looks like you’re still there. Even more, hire a lawn service to keep your grass mowed and your yard kept up. Invest in a timer that will turn your lights, television set, or other electronics on and off during certain times of the day to make it seem like you are home.
