SXSW - South by Southwest

The world’s largest annual film/music/interactive conference draws 20,000 to Austin each year. The event includes many live performances by well known artists and some who will be well known in the future. The nine-day long events go non-stop, and many are free.
River Tubing Fun for the Whole Family

On the Guadelupe River to Canyon Lake through the famous “horseshoe Loop”. You pick your tube – long or short, alone or with a group and spend the day. There is no better way for the family to get away from the heat during the summer months.

The many lakes in the area are a major attraction, especially during the hot and humid summer months. Lake Travis, Lake Austin, and Lady Bird Lake are the 3 largest lakes within the Austin Area, Lady Bird Lake runs right through the downtown area and includes several parks where you can enjoy the water while listening to live music.
Historical Sites

There  are two that are fighting for the top ranking: Fredericksburg and Gruene. Which takes the top spot? The historical society of Texas is not sure, so they swap the honor between the two. Both feature homes built in the later half of the 1800’s which now house bed and breakfasts, antique stores and gift shops. Both are a tribute to the German immigrants who settled in Texas – and the food speaks for itself.

If you don’t like bats, you can skip this one. The Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge houses the world’s largest urban population of Mexican Freetailed Bats. An estimated 1.5 million of them reside under the bridge. People come from all over the world to watch their daily emergence at sunset – when they swarm out to hunt for insects. An estimated 100,000 spectators are drawn to this site each year.

With 3 acres the 4th largest natural pool in the US, created millions of years ago when a land shift in the Balcones Fault created the pool that contained several springs.  The water maintains a temperature of 68F year round and is known to have healing qualities.
Museum of the Weird

Aptly located in the back of Lucky Lizard Curio Shop on 6th Street, has a collection from the obscure to the bizarre to the ….. ah, weird, thus the name. A must for anyone who likes stuff that is out of the ordinary. A flashback to the Curio Tents at the Carneval.
